The most common questions we get asked by patients about orthodontics in Milan

At Studio Bracchetti in Milan we are experts in orthodontics for children and adults. We are here to answer any questions that patients may have about straightening their teeth, whether orthodontics is the right choice for them and which system would work best for. We have compiled some of our most commonly asked questions and answers here.

How can orthodontics fix the gap between my front teeth?

A fixed appliance or traditional braces can be used: braces would be placed on a few teeth either side of the diastema (the gap between the front teeth) to close the space. You could also use clear aligners on the upper teeth to close the space.

Whichever system you choose, there is a strong chance that the teeth will try to move back and reopen the gap. You will need to maintain the results of orthodontics over a time longer than in other orthodontic cases. This is often done by placing a fixed small retainer behind the teeth to keep the teeth in place.

Do I have too many teeth in my jaw?

If you have severe crowding, it’s not that you have ‘too many’ teeth but that your jaws are too small for  all of your teeth. Through orthodontics we can either widen the arches to make space for the teeth or you reduce the number of teeth with extractions.

Do all crooked teeth need orthodontics?

  • Aesthetic concerns – if you lack confidence in your smile due to crooked teeth this may be a good reason for undergoing orthodontic treatment.
  • Oral hygiene – crooked teeth can be more difficult to keep clean, which may make orthodontics a necessary option.
  • Stability concerns – crooked teeth can affect your bite and the load on the teeth. This can cause progressive displacement over time.
  • Functional disruption – can occur with breathing if teeth are sticking out and cause a problem with the lips fully sealing.

Am I too old for teeth straightening treatment in Milan?

Absolutely not! The biological system you activitate when you apply pressure on a tooth to move it is exactly the same whatever your age. It is as efficient when you are an adult or a teenager. The goals might change but the treatments will be as effective.

Will I lose weight during orthodontic treatment in Italy?

Not necessarily. You can eat anything with fixed braces or removable aligners, although it can be harder to clean teeth with fixed appliances, so you may want to avoid sticky foods, for example.

Will braces/aligners correct TMJ and my tooth grinding problem?

We would first need to diagnose the reason for your jaw pain before knowing if orthodontics can help your TMJ. There could be many other reasons for jaw pain, but where the problem has been directly linked to the jaw and teeth, then braces and aligners may help.

Are braces/aligners uncomfortable as as adult?

 apparecchi fissi/allineatori

Fixed braces are perhaps more uncomfortable initially: It can be a little harder to adjust to having the fixed appliance than to adapt initially to the removable aligners. The removable aligners need to be taken off and replaced, which can be difficult to get used to.

In both cases, when the removable aligner or the fixed brace system is being activated, during each appointment, there can be some discomfort for the first couple of days. This is when the teeth move most and so it can be difficult.

Is it easy to talk with braces/aligners?

Yes. It takes a few days to get used to the fixed appliance, when they are first placed. We place the appliances in the first appointment and then a week later we apply the wires to make it easier to get used to. With Invisalign, speech is even less affected.

Is it easier to get tooth decay when you have adult braces in Milan?

We don’t generally see any increase in decay or inflammation because of orthodontics. When you wear braces you have to be accurate with your oral hygiene. The bracket is attached to the tooth with a resin that releases fluoride, which helps to prevent decay around the bracket: but of course, if the fixed appliance causes plaque build-up there will be a higher risk of decay. However, we would address this during regular monthly appointments, making a note of any hygiene issues and asking patients to see the hygienist if there are issues with brushing and cleaning.

Can orthodontics in Milan change the profile of my chin and jaw?

Yes. By changing the position of the teeth you can change the projection of the upper and lower teeth in the face. Any major changes that you would like to make would include surgery or extractions in the treatment planning, but even more subtle changes determined by orthodontics only  would change the position of the lip and the way the teeth bite together. Any change in the teeth will aesthetically affect the smile and the lip position. Your dentist will explain the planned changes both aesthetically and dentally for your smile and how this will affect your face and profile.

How do I know if I have an open bite or cross bite and how does this affect my teeth and mouth?

An open bite is defined as the front teeth of the upper and lower jaw not overlapping frontally. If there is a gap vertically between your upper and lower teeth that is an open bite.

The posterior crossbite is in your back teeth. The upper jaw should be wider than the lower jaw and contain the lower jaw. If for some reason the upper jaw on either side or both falls inside the lower jaw that is defined as a posterior crossbite.

An anterior crossbite is when the lower jaw protrudes out at the front. This is often picked up in children and is one of the few treatments done on children at six years old because if not treated it prevents the upper jaw from growing properly.

Will I need surgery before orthodontic treatment in Milan?

If you do need surgery it will normally be performed during the orthodontic treatment; the teeth will be straightened if you need some arch alignment.

Can orthodontics just fix a few of my upper teeth?

This can definitely be done with limited appliances. You will discuss your specific goals with your orthodontist who will then create the right treatment plan for your smile.

How will orthodontic treatment affect my lifestyle in Italy?

It won’t affect your lifestyle a great deal, however you may need to dedicate a little more time to oral hygiene on a daily basis.

You will need to come to appointments; which are roughly one hour in duration, every four to six weeks. Other than that, you can eat and drink normally, choose a system that is discrete and that will have little or no impact on your social life.

The major lifestyle impact is the positive one once you have your new smile after treatment!
